"We are gratified that the US government approved these petitions. Approving these petitions will help domestic manufacturers of these products save American jobs," said AMTAC Executive Director Auggie Tantillo.

"While we are pleased that the US government approved two cases, we are disappointed that the US government delayed decisions on some of the other cases. For instance, the case on wool trousers was filed on December 6, 2004, yet this is the third time that the decision has been delayed. Meanwhile, US imports from China in this critical category are up 198 percent. People are hurting and need the safeguards," added NTA President Karl Spilhaus.

"It is important to note that both cases approved today were filed as threat-based cases in December of 2004. Today's approvals validate the US textile industry's prediction that China would surge into the market in a disruptive way," commented NCTO President Cass Johnson.

According to the US Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA), US imports from China of the products where safeguards were approved were up dramatically:

"The US textile industry also filed safeguard cases covering socks, skirts, woven blouses, nightwear/pajamas, swimwear, and curtains that the US government is expected to decide this fall. These cases are veryimportant to US textile manufacturers and we urge the U.S. government to approve them as soon as possible after October 1, 2005," stressed Johnson.
