Trade welcomes jammed SINO-US textile talks

Cases decided between October 1 and December 31 are eligible for a twelve-month safeguard. Cases decided between January 1 and September 30 only are eligible for a safeguard through the end of the calendar year.

"Unless a comprehensive agreement with China is reached, the US textile industry intends to file cases reapplying for safeguards on all categories where a safeguard petition was approved prior to October 1," said Spilhaus.

"In addition, the US textile industry has been reviewing the data of US imports from China in other categories. We do not rule out filing additional safeguard petitions," concluded Tantillo.

In terms of volume through June 2005, the safeguard petitions approved today:
- cover 0.34 percent of total US textile and apparel imports from the world;
- cover 1.07 percent of total US textile and apparel imports from China, and;
-cover 23.55 percent of US imports from the world in the categories affected.

In terms of value through June 2005, the safeguards approved today:
- cover 0.039 percent of the $795.1 billion in total US imports;
- cover 0.28 percent of the $109.2 billion in total imports from China;
- cover 0.73 percent of the $42.4 billion in total US textile and apparel imports;
- cover 28.43 percent of the $1.08 billion in total imports in the individual categories affected;
- cover 2.86 percent of the $10.75 billion in total US textile and apparel imports fromChina, and;
