Re-exports to Mainland for outward processing slightly up

In the third quarter of 2007, 31% of Hong Kong's total exports to the mainland of China (the Mainland) were for outward processing. The proportion was 45% for domestic exports and 30% for re-exports.

On the other hand, 54% of Hong Kong's imports from the Mainland were related to outward processing, according to statistics released December 20 by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD). Over the same period, 78% of Hong Kong's re-exports of Mainland origin to other places were produced through outward processing in the Mainland.

The corresponding proportions for exports to the Mainland in the third quarter of 2006 were 35% for total exports, 54% for domestic exports and 34% for re-exports; while proportions for imports from the Mainland and for re-exports of Mainland origin to other places were 64% and 82% respectively.

In January-September of 2007, 35% of Hong Kong's total exports to the Mainland were for outward processing; the figure was 47% for domestic exports and 34% for re-exports. On the other hand, 60% of Hong Kong's imports from the Mainland were related to outward processing. Over the same period, 78% of Hong Kong's re-exports of Mainland origin to other places were produced through outward processing in the Mainland.

The corresponding proportions in January-September of 2006 were 36% for total exports to the Mainland, 54% for domestic exports to the Mainland, 36% for re-exports to the Mainland, 65% for imports from the Mainland and 81% for re-exports of Mainland origin to other places.
