ASSOCHAM has recently been focusing on strengthening the trade relations between India and Afro Arab region. After having successfully organized trade fairs in Khartoum, Sharjah and Sana'a, ASSOCHAM is now organizing an exhibition of Indian products in D'jibouti from 9th to 12th January 2008.
The Republic of D'jibouti covers an area of 23000 square kilometers. It shares borders with Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia. D'jibouti has 370 km long coastline on the Red Sea and the strait of Aden. A former French colony, it gained independence in June 1977.
D'jibouti is a small country with less than a million of its own population. But a large number of foreign troops, mostly French and American, many with their families, are stationed in this strategic Horn of Africa country. It serves as the only port for landlocked Ethiopia which is connected with it through a railway line.
It is a liberal economy, thriving completely on imports and the revenues generated from the shipping facilities at its Red Sea port of Djibouti located at the crossroads of maritime routes with vast modern infrastructure. Dubai Ports World (DP World) has 20 year concession since 2000 for the management of the port.
The country produces nothing at present. It has however been striving to put up manufacturing units of various day to day needs. Large quantities of its imports are re-exported to other African countries.
There exist excellent opportunities for Indian SMEs to try and supply consumer products, electrical and agricultural machineries, pharma products besides setting up manufacturing units.
