Footwear export takes long stride in Feb

Vietnam Leather and Shoe Association (LEFASO) recently reports that in the first two months 2008, Vietnamese footwear enterprises earned US $769 million from exports, posting a rise of 25.2 percent in comparison with same period last year.

The statistics show that in the month of February only, the figures touched $300 million.

Inspite of such good results, the association still worries about various difficulties the industry is facing. Lack of labourers, weak production of raw materials, limited export markets and fierce competition from Chinese rivals, are posing obstacles in the path of development.

Besides, experts are concerned about the weak designing, productivity and promotion of the industry.

According to an official from LEFASO, in order to keep such high growth in the rest of the months, and to fulfill the target of the year, the industry must produce high–value added products as well as explore new export markets.

Now, the exports will be focused on US, Japan, Taiwan and Eastern Europe rather than EU, added the Lefaso person.
