Red Springs sock-making plant, Clayson Knitting Co Inc has decided to lay off 125 employees.

The last day of employment for the laid-off workers is scheduled February 17, 2006, said Bruce Hogan, Director of Manufacturing.

Global market changes have forced the company to bring down costs to stay in business, hence it is turning the plant into a distribution center, Hogan said.

Customers clamoring for lower prices, high fuel prices, increasing operating expenses and insurance costs are the factors in transforming its in house business into a company that uses imports, offshore manufacturing and in-house production, Hogan said.
