The moment you step into Kala Kriti, a pretty little boutique store at 10, Lansdowne Terrace, close to Deshapriya Park, it carries the unmistakable aroma of traditional bound Bengal.
Ma Durga statue is all pervading, greeting at the entrance; red terracotta flooring covers the vastness of the floor and the natural feel of the collection laid out on show.
The Bengal look and feel was uppermost on the minds of Radha Kothari and Poonam Tondon sisters, while setting up this place, three years back. Radha the idea germinator, confirms that Kala Kriti was basically an extension of Bengal, and she handles production and implementation of orders. Sibling Poonam provides all design and creative inputs.
Spread over one thousand square feet, this studio-cum-workshop has a very different story to tell today, although the idea was born ten years ago, purely out of a hobby, can be traced back to a small store near Chakraberia.
Kala Kriti is committed to run twelve homes, said Poonam. The design den is like a close-knit family, dedicated to the team of printers Sudha, Himanshu, Lakhan, Sanat and Shankar.
Although it began just in a simple manner, now has incredible accountability attached to it.
Jharoka-style windows at regular intervals make way for sufficient sunshine and give an extra element to the interiors.
A clay statue of Mansadevi, placed near the centre of the store, is the real eye-catcher.
Lots of bamboo is used on the ceiling as well as on the doors of the trial room.
