Retail giant Wal-Mart has opened its doors in Kearny at 1215 Harrison Avenue, just seven miles from New York City.
The new 142,566-square-foot Wal-Mart store features many of the newer designs and products Wal-Mart is introducing at new and remodeled stores this year.
Kearny Mayor Alberto Santos and other community leaders shared their thoughts on what the new store brings to the Kearny community and the greater Newark area, starting with 350 new jobs, sales tax revenue, and everyday low prices.
The company also donated $32,000 to local charities upon the store's opening. As a part of these gifts, more than $7,000 was presented to the Osmond Foundation as a part of Children's Miracle Network, helping children's hospitals in New Jersey. In the last 12 years, Wal-Mart has given and raised more than $2.2 million to assist children's hospitals in the New York/New Jersey metro area.
"Promoting job growth is critical to the future of our community," said Mayor Alberto Santos. "This store is an excellent example of job creation. I'm delighted to welcome this retail development into our community," added Santos.
More than 8,000 applications have been received to date from local citizens seeking a job at the new store. The store will bring more than 350 new jobs to the market, most of which will be full-time. It is the 44th Wal-Mart to open in the state.
"We anticipated the number of applicants would be high, but this outcome tells another story," said Lance De La Rosa, Regional VP. "We know this community welcomes not just the Wal-Mart shopping experience, but the good jobs, benefits and career opportunities they have heard about."
