Online retailer The Talbots Inc announced total Company sales for fiscal June, the five weeks ended July 2, 2005, increased 9% to $197.6 million from $181.7 million for the five weeks ended July 3, 2004.
Comparable store sales increased 5.9% for the month. Year-to-date sales for the twenty-two weeks ended July 2, 2005 increased 9% to $781.4 million from $718.0 million reported for the twenty-two weeks ended July 3, 2004. Comparable store sales increased 4.7% for the twenty-two week period.
Arnold B. Zetcher, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, "We are pleased with our June comparable store sales increase of 5.9%, driven by consistently strong selling trends throughout the month. Our semi-annual clearance event, which began on June 16th, got off to a solid start and remained healthy during the period."
"They believe they have sufficient inventory to support continued strong markdown selling in July, which is primarily a clearance month for our company.
As a result, they are reconfirming our prior expectation for second quarter earnings per share in the range of $0.32, up from the $0.28 earned on an operating basis last year. On a reported basis, last year's second quarter earnings per diluted share was $0.34 and included a $0.06 tax benefit," continued Mr. Zetcher.
"As our spring and summer selling seasons come to an end, we look forward to closing out a successful second quarter and first half performance," Mr. Zetcher concluded.
