A Devastating Pacific Storm Pounded The Northwest While The Plains, Midwest, And Northeast Endured Wintry Weather Hampering Retail Traffic.

Weekend Review (8-9 December 2007): Yet another Pacific storm that came ashore late week in California and the Southwest provided a return to wintry weather across much of the West. Early in the weekend, heavy rains fell in California while significant snows occurred across much of the Intermountain West.

Much colder (below normal) temperatures followed the winter storminess with freezing temperatures even in much of California. This storm moved out into the U.S. interior providing another round of wintry weather across the Central Plains, Midwest and Northeast. A mixture of ice and snow fell in many major Midwestern cities (e.g. Kansas City, St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit) eastward to Boston. Retail traffic was likely hampered in these areas.

Last Week (week-ending 12/08/2007): The weather was very active during the week across North America. Early in the week, a storm off the East Coast strengthened, dumping heavy snows across interior New England and the St. Lawrence Valley. Many locations saw an average of 6 to 10 inches with heavier amounts in the higher elevations.

Unseasonably cold temperatures moved in behind the storm to envelope the entire eastern half of the continent through the remainder of the week. In the West, an extremely powerful Pacific storm devastated coastal Washington and Oregon with exceptionally heavy rains (6 to 8 inches on average).
