Cincinnati based leading department store retailer Federated Department Stores Inc is appealing to shoppers nationwide to join the company, its stores and employees in a drive to raise up to $3 million - and possibly much more - for Hurricane Katrina disaster relief and recovery.

"It's time for us to come together to help alleviate the pain and suffering in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida," said Terry J. Lundgren, Federated's Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. "As the full impact of this catastrophe comes to light, all Americans have an obligation to reach out and do what they can to support relief and rebuilding efforts."

Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 7, customers in all Federated-owned stores nationwide will be able to contribute $1.00 or more to hurricane relief with or without a purchase. The company will match all customer donations on a dollar-for-dollar basis, up to $1 million, with all funds split evenly between the American Red Cross and Salvation Army.

The appeal, to be supported by advertising and in-store signage, includes shoppers at Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Famous-Barr, Filene's, Foley's, Hecht's, Kaufmann's, Lord & Taylor, L.S. Ayres, Marshall Field's, Meier & Frank, Robinsons-May, Strawbridge's, The Jones Store, David's Bridal and Priscilla of Boston. Contributions also will be accepted online through department store sites linked to www.may-co.com.

In a separate employee-related effort, the companyalready has begun an internal fundraising drive among its more than 240,000 associates nationwide. Through an online system developed by Federated, employees can make personal donations directly to the American Red Cross and/or Salvation Army.
