China is the largest trading partner for India in imports of several textile products, maintaining the top position as a supplier of yarn, fabric, and home textiles.

According to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro, India imported yarn worth $2.074 billion last year, with imports from China valued at $1.426 billion, accounting for 68.76 per cent of the total. During the first two months of the current year, yarn imports from China totalled $153.715 million, which was 62.54 per cent of its total yarn imports of $245.779 million.

Similarly, India imported fabric worth $1.648 billion, out of which $1.012 billion came from China, representing 61.39 per cent of India’s total fabric imports. In January-February, the country imported fabric worth $293.287 million, with China's share being 65.56 per cent. Specifically, India's fabric imports from China were valued at $192.293 million in the period.

Although India is one of the major exporters of finished textile products, it also imports home textiles and apparel in limited quantities. The country imported home textiles worth $674.185 million and $102.087 million in 2023 and January-February 2024 respectively. Imports from China were recorded at $175.090 million (25.97 per cent) and $33.730 million (33.04 per cent), maintaining China's position as the top supplier in this category.

China was the second-largest supplier in imports of fibre and apparel. India imported fibre worth $1.669 billion in 2023, with $176.924 million (10.41 per cent) coming from China. During January-February 2024, imports from China totalled $23.360 million, which was 10.52 per cent of the total fibre imports of $222.078 million, as per TexPro.

India imported apparel worth $1.564 billion in 2023 and $224.381 million in the first two months of this year, with supplies from China amounting to $276.499 million and $38.056 million in the respective periods, making it the second largest supplier for India.
