They were followed by Uzbekistan, Chad, and Sudan with 8.5, 7.9, and 7.8 percent market share.
The United States ranked ninth with 3,710 MT and a market share of 5 percent. About 34 percent of the cotton imported from the U.S. consisted of Pima.
This is a substantially lower percentage compared to the last four years when the Pima share was well above 50 percent. Although raw cotton imports to Germany are decreasing, it is still important for the U.S. cotton sector to maintain its presence in this valuable market.
Marketing efforts should be targeted to consumers and retail establishments to highlight the use of U.S. cotton in finished products rather than promoting raw cotton use in the declining spinning and weaving sectors.
The total turnover value for the German textile industry (includes yarn and fabric, but excludes apparel) amounted to 12.9 billion Euro (U.S. $ 16 billion3) in CY 2005, a drop of 3.4 percent compared to CY 2004. The turnover of apparels amounted to 9 billion Euro (U.S. $ 11.4 billion), an increase of 2.3 percent.
