In India, for instance, the group transferred the cement business of Indian Rayon, now called Aditya Birla Nuvo, to Grasim Industries in 1998 to create a single cement company.
It is not known if the Thai exercise will be repeated in other countries where there are similar structures. In Indonesia, for instance, the group has three different companies making yarns - PT Elegant Textiles, PT Indo Liberty Textiles and PT Sunrise Bumi Textiles. Philippines also has three separate textile companies making yarns. The group spokesperson would not comment on other companies.
The AV Birla group has also put key people in charge of various global businesses and for coining common brand names across different markets.
For instance, the chemicals business in India and Thailand and other places is being looked after by KK Maheshwari, also a director of Aditya Birla Nuvo. Rakesh Jain, another director on the Nuvo board, handles the carbon black business globally, while Shailendra Jain looks after the viscose staple fibre operations.
