Jharkhand Govt steps in to spin success in silk

Soft silk priced exorbitantly and having global sales, are spun out of cocoons involving hard labour by people often exploited by middlemen and brokers.

State-of-the-art training centre for cocoon growers was inaugurated by Arjun Munda, Chief Minister Jharkhand, which might help reduce labour abuses to a thing of the past.

Training will be provided at Akarshani, a vocational training centre at Amda village in the Kuchai area of Seraikela-Kharsawan district constructed by the State Government.

National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kolkata (NIFT) will send a two member professors team will impart 15-day training course to cocoon growers in use of modern methods.

This will help improve quality and reduce costs and time for the workers.

Dhirendra Kumar, State Director of Silk, Handloom and Handicraft, said that cocoon growers were exploited by middlemen and brokers who bought cocoons at throwaway prices, were selling them at exorbitant rates.

State Government will now help growers market the silk threads at the right price and prevent their exploitation, he said.

The Government has spent over Rs5 crore for the project. A training centre equipped with 18 machines for both, reeling and spinning has been established.

The two NIFT . The training for the inaugural batch, which has 30 students, starts tomorrow.

A list of cocoon growers has been drawn who will be trained at Akarshani in a phased manner.

The Government will provide credit card of a public sector financial institution worth Rs 25,000 on the completion of the training course.
