Shanghai to promote science, ecological fortification

China's top legislator Wu Bangguo, said that Shanghai ought to lead the country in science modernization, industrial structural reforms, and ecological fortification.

Wu, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), visited Shanghai's commercial district, ports, and industrial bases for chemicals, machinery, and ship making.

He asked local leaders to give high-tech firms more cooperation in the market and offer incentives to technology specialties.

Due to the vicinity of several colleges, science institutes, and big firms Shanghai has the outstanding advantage of developing technology and can mark great progress, Wu said.

He called for growing efforts in the coming five years to develop the city's service industry, especially logistics, exhibition service, and services that offer convenience for the general public.

Conventional industries like textile sector, must observe for development at high ends, he said.

Shanghai should pay close attention to environmental protection by shutting down polluting factories and vetoing any projects that might post environmental threats, Wu sdvised.

Focusing the worsening city surroundings countrywide, Wu advised Shanghai to pay close awareness to ecological fortification by shutting down polluting units and refusing permission to projects that might post environmental threats.

Shanghai should escort the country in metropolitan ecologicalprotection and prepare to hold the world expo in 2010 with good environmental surroundings, he said.
