Jute Board bill to be piloted in Parliament, says Textile Minister S Vaghela

The Government is planning to set up a Jute Board by merging Jute Manufacturing Development Council (JMDC) and National Centre for Jute Diversification (NCJD) for the benefit of Jute growers in the country. The Union Minister for Textiles, Shri Shankersinh Vaghela said in Guwahati today. Shri Vaghela said that a Bill is to be introduced in the coming monsoon session of the Parliament.

The Textile Minister said that the Jute Sector is in the priority list of the UPA Government and wants to give all help to Jute growers on the pattern of cotton sector. Shri Vaghela said that the UPA Government has sanctioned Rs 355 crore for the Jute Technology Mission.

Under the Mission there are four Mini Missions. Under Mini Mision IV apart from modernization of jute mills sufficient provisions are made under various schemes for design and development of jute diversified products including Jute Geo-Textiles, he added. He said that in the Mini Mission-3 of National Jute Policy 2005, 20 departmental Purchase Centre will be set up in the country in which one Market yard three Departmental Purchase Centre would be in Assam particularly.

Apart from this 10 market regulated centers are to develop in the Mini Mission-3 with the participation of the 7 Jute Growing States i.e. West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Orrisa and Andhra Pradesh.

Shri Vaghela said that when the market was going down, Government helped the Jute growers by increasing the Minimum Support price of Jute from Rs 910 to Rs 1000 per quintal. This is the highest increase in the last 5 years, he added. The Textile Minister hoped that in this year Jute sector is expecting a increase of 25% of raw Jute.
