Center will be investing Rs850 crores over the next three years to develop infrastructure for growth of regional trade in the North East.

Union Minister of state for commerce Jairam Ramesh has promised nine new projects and investments to develop Manipur`s export potential in horticulture and handicrafts.

Investment will be made by the Agricultural and Processed Foods Export Development Authority (APEDA) to establish a cold storage facility for perishable commodities at Imphal airport.

Union Minister visited Imphal East at the cocoon production centre at Seijang and sericulture centre at Sangaipat and praised the state government for its new initiatives in sericulture.

Sericulture project is part of an Rs490 crores project over the next five years being funded in Manipur by the Japanese government.

Moreh project will be aided with Rs70 crores that is being executed by the public sector company, RITES to be launched shortly.

The value of formal and informal border trade transacted between India and Myanmar exceeds Rs2000 crores, although only 22 items are exchanged under the bilateral border trade agreement.

Ministry of Commerce has proposed to the Central government to remove restrictions so that trade can take place without any commodity restrictions at Moreh and also similarly with Bangladesh and Nepal.

A final decision on this liberalization is expected shortly as the move would benefit the people living in the border areas.
