This write-up deals with the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis for Bangladesh. The country's accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and globalisation process provides simultaneously opportunities as well as threat in the international business. The impact of globalisation on the economy of Bangladesh is inevitable. The country is facing challenges in its integration into the global economy. But the country should increase her export capability, which may face tough challenges from the developed countries as well as other developing countries those who have technologically superiority and infrastructural advantages.
Bangladesh is a labour surplus country. But most of the labour is unskilled for which cost efficiency cannot be attained. Lead-time in the garments sector in Bangladesh is much lower which ultimately place a difficult condition for the producers. To reduce lead-time capacity building is necessary. Due to low level of labour productivity, per unit cost of production becomes higher which results impact of lower rate of wage offset. If core competencies can be achieved and human being can be transformed into value than it will be beneficial for the nation.
Post quota regime may increase quality of the RMG products but will negatively affect female workers job conditions as out of 1.59 million garments workers 1.49 million workers are female in the RMG sector.
When free and fair trade on the basis of equality and merit can be arranged then it may bring sustainable development as well as may be used as an engine of growth. But primary condition is to develop proper infrastructure, which we are still lacking. Trade union activities in Bangladesh in most of the cases do not go in favour of the labour group, rather they are full of nepotism and always in favour of personal gain of the labour leaders at the expense of the ill-fated labours. Moreover, garments workers are fell victim of the oppression of the garments owners who in maximum cases treat them not as human being. If competition can change atmosphere of the work culture and work ethics can be able to achieve then human and labour rights can be well established and may bring positive impact on the economy.
