Prof G L Peiris, Minister of Export Development and International Trade, made an observation during the inaugural ceremony of the Sri Lanka Footwear and Leather Fair exhibition of 2007 that the over all development of the country must flow to the village level as well, since it is only through this that an equitable income can be attained nationally.
On this note the minister further commented saying, "The per capita income in Colombo is seven times higher than that of Moneragala, Polonnaruwa or any remote area and the vision is to achieve an equitable income nationally.”
The exhibition was held at Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) from November 24-26 and was the first ever footwear and leather goods exhibition to have been organized by the Export Development Board under the guidance of the Ministry of Export Development and International Trade, Ministry of Industrial Development, Industrial Development Board, Sri Lanka Footwear Association and Sri Lanka Small and Medium Footwear and Leather Goods Association.
What made the expo so successful was the fact that more than 150 stalls were set up with local and foreign suppliers of raw materials, machinery and components showcasing their goods.
The Minister also gave reasons for choosing this particular sector for the exhibition saying,"The footwear and leather industry has much potential today, which the apparel industry had two decades ago. We chose this industry for the most relevant criteria.”
