The bill’s centrepiece is what the administration calls the largest middle-class tax cut in American history. It eliminates federal taxes on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security income. In addition, the legislation expands child tax credits and introduces tax breaks on car loans for American-made vehicles.
On the economic front, the bill includes protections for two million family farms by ending so-called ‘double taxation,’ while advancing US energy independence through increased domestic production and reduced reliance on foreign oil. Supporters say the move will ease energy prices and create jobs across the energy sector. The OBBB also seeks to reduce the national deficit by over $2 trillion through a combination of spending cuts and the rollback of environmental initiative funding.
The legislation will also set in motion plans to deport one million undocumented migrants annually, expands border enforcement, and includes new infrastructure for immigration control. The bill also includes defence upgrades, including investment in a new ‘Golden Dome’ missile shield, increased support for the Coast Guard, and modernisation of the US air traffic control system. Additionally, it strengthens Medicaid support for vulnerable populations.
The bill has received praise from several key industry groups. The National Cotton Council (NCC) applauded its passage, highlighting the importance of the bill’s agricultural provisions in supporting US cotton producers and the broader farming community.
NCC Chairman Patrick Johnson said, “This legislation represents a significant step forward for cotton producers, the cotton supply chain, and the broader agricultural community providing vital support to help us continue to provide the world with the highest quality fibre while navigating ongoing challenges.”
The National Retail Federation (NRF) also expressed strong support, with its president and CEO Matthew Shay commending the leadership of Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune for pushing the bill through before the Independence Day holiday.
“President Trump campaigned on a promise to revitalise the US economy. This historic legislation ensures that his vision to push forward pro-growth policies and measures that rein in government spending becomes a reality to the benefit of American businesses and hard-working families for generations to come,” Shay said.
