The Fiber Industry Development Authority (FIDA) has assured all help for the promotion and prosperity of the abaca industry in the years ahead.
Explaining the role of her organization at Abaca Expo on May 17, 2006, Cecilia Gloria J Soriano, Administrator, FIDA, stated that it was a dedicated multi-function agency promoting fiber products in different markets and establishing processing facilities for Abaca related products.
While offering details about the cultivation of Abaca, she stressed on the fact that Philippines must remain a reliable supplier of good quality abaca fiber.
Efforts were being made by FIDA to rope in foreign companies to invest in setting up abaca based manufacturing plants within the country.
Demand for Abaca will multiply, in case China prefers teabags made from its fibre, or the Japanese coming up with news currency notes made from this unique fiber.
But the most important factor boosting the industry will be the proposed RA 9242 regulation that directs government workers in Philippines use fabrics for uniform made out this tropical fibre to ultimately spur its requirement.
In Philippines, Abaca industry has already got a shot in its arm with the Monetary Board agreeing to manufacture P100 to P2, 000 banknotes in 20-80 abaca-cotton blend, Soriano informed.
Traditionally, as a basic material for coarse and stiff clothing and footwear besides cordage application, abaca find its utility in non-wovens and disposables and fiber composites for the automotive industry, pulp and paper industries for tea bags, meat and sausage casings, cigarette papers, filter papers, currency notes and stencil papers.
