The China National Textile and Apparel Council reports show that lower production of wool in the international arena has led to rise in prices of raw material. This in turn has caused problems for woolen spinning corporations and further leading to slower speed of production.

Experts believe, this year, increased price of wool is one of the biggest problem for the development of Chinese wool spinning industry as some of the enterprises consumes around 300 to 350 thousands tons of wool annually which accounts for the two thirds of the total imports of the country. As far as data are concerned, China has come out to be one of the largest importers of wool across the globe.

According to the statistics from China customs, from January to October this year, China imported wool at about US $5,622 per ton, up 25.45 percent over the same period last year. Of which, the average price of imports from Australia was at $7,146 per ton, rising up to 35.67 percent.

The domestic market price of wool has also increased. The Nanjing Wool Market transaction information shows that the monthly average composite index of Nanjing Wool Market in October 2007 read at 62.09 yuan per kg, increasing 24.73 percent over the same time last year, and gaining 9.97 percent over the average composite index in January.

In the time period from January to October this year, above-scale wool textile enterprises produced 3,17,700 tons of woolen yarn, down 7.03 percent on year, 8.84 percentage points lower from the growth of the same time last year. Cumulative gross production of woolen fabrics was 696 million meters, an increase of 4.34 percent on year, down 3.94 percentage points from the same period of the previous year.

Customs data showed that from January to October this year, the average price of China's blanket exports was $10.13 per piece, falling down 7.92 percent. Carpet export price averaged at $4.16 per square meter, plunging 16.3 percent;

However, on a brighter note export price of woolen knitted apparel was averaged at $6.89 per piece, a growth 9.71 percent; woolen woven garment priced at $23.34 each unit, an increase of 3.41 percent on year.
