Christian Lacroix celebrated his twentieth anniversary as a couturier in his true style as one of the most extravagant and diverse designers. The 39 dazzling creations that models sashayed on the ramp in the Palais de Tokio on Tuesday had the Lacroix stamp in every seam and décor.
A couturier to perfection, Lacroix's love for ribbons, tassels and beads, coupled with his generous use of satin and silk wowed the audience. Noticeable among those was a beautiful 'tulip' dress in powder satin leather covered with a velvety black lace. The bodice was highlighted with pleated ribbons and bolero sleeves.
Lacroix's well-known 'puffball' of the '80s — which he had introduced in brazen metallic prints and which Vogue editor Anna Wintour described as one that 'revolutionized fashion' — featured in this show as a tie-dyed dress. Made of pastel-coloured silk, it had a splash of generous green in its parachute-shaped tunic.
Lacroix's creations have a distinct trace of heady femininity as well as a superb blend of classic Paris and his native Arles that is both a delight to the eye and appealing to audience.
However, he introduced a new disparity, both in his remarks printed on the programme as well as some of his designs. He demanded a collision of rigidity and chaos, a marriage of crinkled and smooth, succinct and otherworldliness. Hence, there was a display of frock-coat or a balloon-coat over plain-coloured dress. This allowed the eye to catch more prominently the outer delicate draping.
