The designer's love for shape and volume was also obvious in his creation of imagery: swirls of satin bunched into lantern-shaped skirts, tufts of silk converted into cocoon opera-coats and puffed sleeves made to look like clouds.
Lacroix's theatrical style usually shows up in his use of colours that are stunning. Shades of blue, red, beige and green lit up the catwalk. Black lace gowns and supple ball gowns with pleated trains projected intricacy of cut and the designer's love for ornamentation.
Supermodel Lily Cole walked the ramp in the closing moments of the show, dressed in a bridal gown that was far removed from the usual bridal wear collections. The gown was a mélange of light blue and vanilla brocade combined with metallic floral silk fabric. She wore a crown of traditional metal flowers. Certainly not your regular bride!
A retrospective of Lacroix's twenty years as a couturier will be held at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris in November.
