Fusing creativity with technology is his biggest contribution to the fashion industry. Yengkhom Devson, the designer and the inventor of Seamless Woven Garment machine (SWG) unveiled his Autumn Future Collection at the NIFT campus, New Delhi.
The show called 'SKIN' was unique in the sense that the garments exhibited were all made by Devson himself using the machine he invented. “It is a unique combination of fashion innovation with technological development”, said Sr. Professor Asha Baxi of NIFT, New Delhi.
During the last couple of years, Devson has been concentrating in upgrading his unique invention called BEMM, a seamless weaving garment machine named after his sister. Developed during his final year at NIFT, this innovative machine has been granted a patent in India and an application has been filed for Patent Cooperation Treaty or PCT in few countries. The fund for improving BEMM has been granted by TePP, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.
The upgradation started with the idea of using engineering drawing as one pioneering way of pattern making with an aim to achieve the production of 3D mechanical and voluminous garments. It explores techniques and mechanisms to overcome difficulties in making a garment with limited resources. The machine BEMM slashes down the number of steps taken in traditional garment making and reduces the production time in addition to cost cutting.
Explaining the usefulness of his invention, Devson said “In garment designing, the right choice of fabric for a particular design is needed. When designers are unable to find the right fabric, they either replace the first choice with a similar one or end up choosing a totally different fabric for the design.
