Trade sources in the viscose yarn sector reported that power looms are running at less than half capacity due to slow demand for fabric and garments, despite the festival season. The current period from July to October is typically considered a time of seasonal demand for viscose yarn. If domestic and export demand does not pick up in the coming weeks, the viscose value chain may face sluggishness throughout the season.
In the Ludhiana market, prices of PC and polyester yarn dropped by ₹2-4 per kg. Recycled polyester fibre also lost significant value in the last couple of days. A trader from the Ludhiana market told Fibre2Fashion, “The market saw a decline in prices because of slow demand and payment constraints. The shipment of textile products, including yarn and fabric, has still not resumed after the political upheaval in Bangladesh. Local demand and garment exports also failed to support the yarn market.”
In Ludhiana, 30 count PC combed yarn (48/52) was traded at ₹205-215 (approximately $2.44-2.56) per kg (GST inclusive); 30 count PC carded yarn (65/35) at ₹193-203 (approximately $2.30-2.42) per kg; 20 recycled polyester fibre yarn at ₹110-120 (approximately $1.31-1.43) per kg; 30 count polyester spun at ₹160-169 (approximately $1.91-2.01) per kg (GST inclusive); and recycled polyester fibre (PET bottle fibre) at ₹73-74 (approximately $0.87-0.88) per kg.
In the Surat market, most varieties and counts of polyester yarn lost value by ₹1-3 per kg due to weak demand and tight payment flows. According to market sources, stockists and traders are forced to reduce yarn prices as mills are pressuring them to take supply against their booked orders. There was no positive factor that could improve market sentiments. Consumer industries are purchasing yarn as per their immediate demand.
In Surat, 30 count polyester spun yarn was traded at ₹147-148 (approximately $1.75-1.76) per kg (GST extra); 40 count poly spun yarn at ₹160-161 (approximately $1.91-1.92) per kg; 50/48 fully drawn yarn (FDY) at ₹116-117 (approximately $1.38-1.39) per kg; 75/72 FDY at ₹107-108 (approximately $1.27-1.29) per kg; and 75 bright yarn at ₹106-107 (approximately $1.26-1.27) per kg.
Viscose yarn prices dropped further in the Surat and Mumbai markets. Trade sources mentioned that there should be seasonal demand for ladies’ garments in the current months, as demand typically picks up during the festival season. However, power loom owners have reduced their production by around 50 per cent due to insufficient demand for fabric and garments.
In Mumbai, imported 30 count viscose vortex yarn was priced at ₹192-198 (approximately $2.29-2.36) per kg, and local 30 count ring-spun viscose yarn at ₹198-204 (approximately $2.36-2.43) per kg. In Surat, 30 count viscose compact yarn (local) was sold at ₹197-200 (approximately $2.35-2.38) per kg (GST extra) and 30 count viscose vortex yarn at ₹196-198 (approximately $2.34-2.36) per kg.
In North India, cotton prices were steady after a slight gain in the last session. An increase in ICE cotton was a positive factor for domestic cotton. However, prices remained stable today due to slow demand and poor quality. Traders reported that cotton arrivals have reduced to almost zero in all the producing states of North India. Ginners and stockists are selling their stock, but their hopes for higher prices have been dashed as they had expected a level of over ₹6,000 per maund of 37.2 kg.
Cotton prices in Punjab ranged from ₹5,670 to ₹5,680 (approximately $67.56-67.68) per maund of 37.2 kg, while in Haryana, prices ranged from ₹5,570 to ₹5,580 (approximately $66.37-66.49). In upper Rajasthan, cotton was priced between ₹5,375-₹5,675 (approximately $64.04-67.62) per maund. Bikaner line cotton was sold for ₹5,770 to ₹5,780 (approximately $68.75-68.87) per maund. In lower Rajasthan, cotton was priced at ₹53,300 to ₹55,500 (approximately $635.08-661.29) per candy of 356 kg.
