The Sri Lankan apparel industry is on a drive towards increasing the value addition process by upgrading knowledge base.
Prasanna Hettiarchi a GM of MAS Holdings, who was present at the recent economic summit held in Colombo said, "Over 90 percent of our apparel industry's employee base is in the grass root levels. If they do not understand the importance of skill of competence, and if we do not give it to them in a professional manner, we realize that a large part of our human capital is not aligned to evolve with customers".
The BCCT is scheduled to begin weaving, knitting, dyeing and finishing laboratories as well and currently is testing an e-learning program, which would teach sewing machinery skills and pattern making.
The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, which has around 60,000 students around the world, began in 1887 as the 'Working Men's College' in Melbourne.
