Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) will participate at Pitti Filati this year and will showcase the timeline of history and photographic representation of 200 years of Merino. This coincides with the Merino 200 launch which is currently rolling out in Europe and Australia with press events already taking place in the UK and Italy.

The Merino 200 program celebrates 200 years of achievements by the Australian wool industry from when the first bale of Australian wool was sent to Britain for commercial sale in 1807, thus establishing the Australian wool trade.

The AWI program includes the launch of, 'Fashion from Fleece; 200 years of Australian wool in fashion' exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum in Australia, from 25th July- 22nd August. It will then travel to London for a trade-only event in September and then on to Paris in January 2008.

The other major event taking place is the protégé program in Italy which includes five young designers, who will be mentored by the world's top designers, and will launch their Merino wool collections in January 2008.

The Spazio Ricerca - The Pitti Filati Trend Forum:
Belgium designer Angelo Figus and Knitwear expert Nicola Miller have joined forces again to create an innovative and excitingly original trend forum for this show. The theme is entitled Zucchero Filato which translates into English as Candy Floss.

It explores the relationships between food and aesthetics through the use of colour, texture and form and evaluates the importance of food design in our contemporary culture. These concepts bring a colourful and charming style direction to the yarns for the Autumn - Winter 2008/09 collection.
