Canada's very oldest departmental store Hudson's Bay Company (Hbc) instructed all 181 of its Ontario stores (Bay, Zellers, Home Outfitters and Designer Depot) to take immediate action in order to reduce energy consumption by 10 percent as the province faces an extreme heat wave.

The Company recently initiated a new four code system to help stores conserve energy year-round. The system is escalated during times of increased pressure on provincial energy systems. Approximately 75 per cent of Hbc stores are centrally monitored, and using Building Automation Systems, adjustments can be made remotely to store energy levels. In all other cases, Hbc contacts stores directly to ensure consumption is reduced.

The system requires stores to reduce energy consumption by the following means:

•Store temperature adjusted by as much as three degrees;

•All perimeter lights as well as all interior signs to be turned off;

•All valance, non-essential display and accent or back light illuminated signs at Bay stores are to be turned off where possible;

Sales floor lighting reduced to 50 per cent for restocking; and,

Lighting in all stockrooms, offices, lunchrooms and washrooms to be turned off when not in use.

Hbc, which has been recognized for its award winning energy conservation program, requires all stores to observe energy conservation policies throughout the year.In the event of an emergency energy situation, Hbc willfurther escalate its system to a 20 per cent reduction, and ultimately a 30 per cent reduction.
