The annual conference of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) took place on 13 October in the award-winning surroundings of Belfast Waterfront Hall. The event attracted almost 200 delegates from a wide range of colour-related disciplines including chemists and colourists, designers and dyers.
With colour and innovation as its central theme, the conference – sponsored by Invest Northern Ireland – offered insights into new research, new thinking and new practices in colour.
The presentations highlighted technological developments destined to shape the future of colour, both within the textile industry and beyond.
The requirement of converting colour creativity into colour certainty was high on the agenda during the day. The launch of the new SDC Colour Accreditation Scheme at the conference – which ensures consistent assessment of colour between every link in the supply chain – means there is now a single, independent system available to manufacturers, retailers and suppliers worldwide.
In the first session, Alan Wragg, speaking about Tesco Clothing's use of technology to meet customers' needs, also announced Tesco's endorsement of the scheme with its 'true understanding of colour application and communication.'
There was also an exclusive interview with Katharine Hamnett, in conversation with Derek McKelvey, in which she discussed and showcased her new collection – produced using ethical methods, organic materials and environmentally-sound dyeing processes – and she spoke of the importance of alerting the fashion world and the consumer to eco-issues.
