Following on from the 2006 SDC Colour Conference held in Belfast on 13 October, the winners of the 2006 SDC Colour in Design competition were announced at the Gala Awards Dinner.
The designs of the finalists were on display in the colour exhibition and all twelve finalists, some of whom had travelled from as far afield as New Zealand and the USA, were present and excitedly awaited the announcement of the winners.
Marks and Spencer sponsored this year's fashion/textile category, which was open to both undergraduates and postgraduates and boasted a record number of entries. Joanna Bowring, colour coordinator for M&S womenswear design, presented the prizes in this section, with the first prize in the undergraduate section being awarded to Victoria Stone of the London College of Fashion (LCF).
Her prize money – a cheque for £1000 – will go some way to supporting Victoria while she undertakes an internship with Christian Lacroix in Paris over the next six months.
Victoria also received the Veronica Bell Award, in memory of the Society's first and only woman president who died in 2003, and the winning college, LCF, received a donation of design software from Lectra which was collected by proud course tutor, Ian Simpson.
The winners in this category, including Victoria and both the runners-up – David Lothian (Chelsea College of Art and Design) and Emily Cornick (Winchester School of Art and Design), who each received cheques for £300 and £200, respectively – were also invited to visit the M&S headquarters to take a tour of the design facilities.
