The Aditya Birla group has brought its major chemical operations in Thailand under one entity and renamed it Aditya Birla Chemicals in a move to consolidate different companies operating in the same field in a single country.
Thai Organic Chemicals Company (TOCC) has been renamed Aditya Birla Chemicals (Thailand) from January 1, a statement on the group's website says. The move follows the merger of three companies - Thai Epoxy and Allied Products, Thai Sulphites and Chemicals, Thai Polyphosphate and Chemicals - with TOCC some time last year.
“Bringing together all our chemical activities under one corporate entity will help us leverage the Aditya Birla brand, the knowledge base, the technology base as well as our customer relationships through a synergistic basket of products and seamless service,” the statement said.
The metals-to-palm oil AV Birla group used to operate in Thailand through 10 companies. They are Thai Rayon (viscose staple fibre), Indo Thai Synthetics (spun and fancy yarns), Century Textiles (fabrics) Thai Acrylic Fibre (acrylic fibre) Thai Carbon Black (carbon black) Thai Peroxide and the four companies mentioned above.
The merger has now cut the number to seven. Thai Peroxide will continue to operate as a separate entity because it is a joint venture with FMC Corporation USA.
A group spokesperson told in Mumbai that the merger was to derive synergies as the companies were operating in similar lines of businesses. The AV Birla group, under its chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla, has been consolidating activities to create bigger companies in a particular field and to ensure that different companies don't operate in the same field in a particular country.
