Italian yarn industry turnover drops 5% to €3.5b in 2005

The turnover of the Italian yarn industry for 2005 fell by 5 percent to €3.5 billion, around 6.7 percent of the overall turnover of the Italian textiles-clothing sector.

On a sectorial level, there were still significant differences between the principal components: in fact, the drop in turnover was lower for woolen yarns (- 3.2 percent) and more pronounced for cotton yarns (- 10.6 percent) and linen yarns (- 10.7 percent).

Production results were, however, particularly unsatisfactory: - 8 percent compared to 2004, making a total decrease over the last five years of more than 30 percent. However, in contrast to the previous three year period, in 2005 the most thought-provoking contribution to sectorial activities came from the domestic market.

In fact, on the foreign trade front, the drop in exports (- 8.9 percent) was accompanied by a reduction in imports (- 4.9 percent), which managed to contain the negative effects.

On a product level, 2005 registered a 9 percent drop in exports which was mainly due to the disappointing results of chemical/woolen yarn blends (- 23.9 percent in value) and cotton yarns (- 9.8 percent). Carded woolen yarns also lost ground at a rate of nearly 5 percent and the growth (+ 6.9 percent) in exports of carded woolen yarns (which still recorded a fall in terms of volume) was unable to compensate for the negative results of the other segments.

Exports for 2005 in terms of quantity showed a more pronounced drop (- 11.9 percent of the total yarns). This figure demonstrates that, albeit with some difficulty, client sectors are becoming more aware of the ongoing trend towards a higher level of Italian supplies and are beginning to 'recognize' rises in the price lists (around + 3 percent in the 2005 export price lists).
