These increases are, however, far from sufficient to cover the considerable investments (in collections, background research, replacement of equipment, expansion of sales networks) carried out by Italian companies in recent years.

With regard to imports, the biggest increases refer to the needlework segment (+ 62.7 percent). The initial flow of carded woolen yarns rose by around 6 percent; imports of linen products remained stable, whereas all the other sectors experienced non-marginal reductions. However, it should be noted that the fall in imports in terms of quantity was only 0.4 percent, signifying a non-marginal drop (- 4.5 percent) of the average prices of imported products.

To sum up the performance of imports and exports, 2005 recorded further slight erosion (73 million) in the sectorial trade balance which dropped below the 400 million thresholds.

In the first part of 2006, the woolen component of the Italian yarn industry began operating in a more favorable context in terms of demand, in Italy (where some client sectors increased their business capacity) as well as, above all, on foreign markets.

In fact, in the first three months of the year, exports of carded woolen yarns increased by around 19 percent. The flows directed towards Hong Kong (which has now become the world's major knitwear production area, in terms of quantity), rose by 117.6 percent, and there was a considerable acceleration in direct trade with a number ofEastern European countries (e.g. Romania + 76.9 percent) and North African countries (e.g. Tunisia + 41.5 percent).
