With regard to worsted yarns, foreign demand has shown clear signs of reawakening in 2006: exports rose by + 4.6 percent in the first three months of this year (whereas 2005 closed with a drop of 4.5 percent), with important contributions not just from non-EU countries (Hong Kong and Romania to mention the two most important examples), but also from some EU markets such as Germany and the UK.
The figures for Germany were particularly encouraging since the 20 percent increase in exports in the first three months of 2006 marked a decisive trend reversal with respect to the decrease of nearly 21 percent recorded last year.
Unfortunately, the results for cotton yarns were not as promising, registering a further small slide (- 2.2 percent) in the first few months of 2006. However, some markets did display renewed vigor as demonstrated by the figures for Spain (+ 22.6 percent), the Czech Republic (+ 20.1 percent) and Hungary (+ 40.5 percent).
The positive results achieved on foreign markets contributed to bringing the production balance of carded yarns for knits back into the black, whilst the ISTAT [Central Statistics Institute] figures point to continuing difficulties for worsted woolen yarn production and, above all, for cotton yarns.
